During the 17th century, a Mughal general along with his son aided the weavers to migrate from Mysore. By way of this, the weavers were known as Masurias and the sarees they made were called Kota Masuria Saree. Kota sarees are made from a blend of cotton and silk, and is often praised for its airy and cozy feel.

Distinctive features of Kota Doria:

The traditional weaving technique used to create Kota Doria Sarees involves a ‘khat’or square-check pattern. This pattern elevates the beauty of the saree.

The fabric of Kota Doria is airy and translucent making them the perfect choice for warm weather. This breathable fabric is sure to captivate the saree-enthusiasts.

Many Kota Doria Sarees feature Zari work, which adds a touch of shimmer and elegance to the sarees.

Some Kota Doria Sarees are adorned with embroidery and motifs. The designs in these sarees range from simple floral patterns to intricate designs, and are considered ideal for social gatherings and parties.

Kota Dorias come in a variety of colors from soft pastel tones to vibrant shades.

The Weaving Process:

The weaving process of these Kota Doria fabric sarees is a labor-intensive traditional craft that requires great artistry, skill and precision. Initially, high quality cotton and silk yarns are selected and dyed in various colors to suit the requirements of the saree. The next process is Warping where the dyed yarns are wound on to a warping reel to create the warp threads of the saree. Further, the yarns are treated with a sizing material to strengthen them. The warp threads are then carefully arranged on a traditional pit loom. The weaving process begins with the insertion of the weft threads through the warp threads. The weft threads are woven over and under alternate warp threads to create a grid-like pattern. After each weft thread is inserted, it is beaten down with comb-like tool to pack the threads firmly together and create a uniform fabric. The ‘khat’ pattern is repeated across the entire length of the saree. After the completion of the weaving process, the saree is removed from the loom and undergoes finishing process such as washing and pressing to ensure fine texture and form.

Overall, Kota Doria sarees symbolize the blend of fine craftsmanship and grace. They are light as air and rich in heritage, and makes it an ideal choice for women of all age groups!
