Maheshwari Sarees, the epitome of elegance and fine craftsmanship, is native to the town of Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. Marked for their intricate hand block prints and exquisite designs, these sarees have conquered both national and international markets. They are characterized by their lightweight, glossy texture, and intricate designs, often featuring traditional motifs like peacocks, floral patterns, and geometric shapes. 

 The Maheshwari Saree is believed to have been designed and developed by the legendary queen, Maa Ahilya Bai Holkar in the 18th century when they were first designed for her royal guests. According to legends, Queen Ahilyabai invited weavers from Surat and Mandu in Gujarat to prepare turban fabric and nine-yard saris that could serve as royal gifts and be worn by the ladies of the Malwa court. The sarees that were produced by these craftsmen became popular as Maheshwari sarees. 

Maheshwari Sarees were originally seen as a symbol of status and luxury, and were worn only by the ladies of royal status. These sarees were also gifted to the royal guests and dignitaries as a mark of respect and pride. 

These sarees were initially made of pure Silk, but with the passage of time, cotton yarn was introduced in the weft. In the present times, these sarees are made in pure cotton and with a mixture of silk and cotton. As fashion trends are getting revolutionized, nowadays, wool is also being used in the production of Maheshwari sarees. These sarees are extremely light in weight and soft in texture. Contemporary Maheshwari saris feature a ground made using a blend of cotton from Coimbatore and silk from Bengaluru. The wool that is used in these sarees is imported from Australia. 

The designs in the Maheshwari sarees were inspired by the the architectural motifs found in the region, such as temples and palaces. These sarees feature a variety of designs, simple and intricate! Maheshwari sarees are typically adorned with traditional borders known as 'kinari'. The borders of the saree have geometric patterns or floral motifs, while the pallu features a larger design. Peacock motifs are a signature design element in Maheshwari sarees. These graceful birds are often intricately woven into the fabric, symbolizing beauty, grace, and elegance. The sarees are also known for their distinctive colors, which range from bright and bold to subtle and muted.
